Bernie Grant Centre, Tottenham, London

the challenge

Spearheaded by the late Bernie Grant MP, this community theatre and education centre for north London includes a 300 seat flexible theatre, rehearsal room and associated spaces. The project also includes a separate classroom/ administration building and a building of enterprise work units. As a beacon for fun and funk, this iconic community facility is transforming its Tottenham neighbourhood. It is a facility of shich the community can really be proud.

the success

The centre hosts a wide variety of theatre and music education workshops, performances and rehearsals – amplified as well as unamplified - professional and student productions, touring as well as local productions. The space is acoustically flexible to satisfy a variety of different acoustical needs – from disco to Shakespeare, on a tight budget. As the architect’s concept includes a complex faceted roof with timber cladding, it was important that the roof structure be light in weight to control costs, yet designed to contain loud music within the building and keep out the traffic noise.

SSD provided full acoustics consulting services, including sound isolation, services noise control and auditorium acoustics, and it was a pleasure to work with David Adjaye's team on this iconic building.
